Invasive Species

Controlling invasive plants and animals that degrade habitats and threaten native species. BICY is responsible for over 700k acres of land and south Florida has a myriad of invasive species that threaten it. Great efforts are made annually to detect, control and reduce invasive plant infestations. The Preserve has also been investing in long term research and management of the Burmese python.  Burmese python, Melaleuca, Old world climbing fern, Brazilian pepper, and Java plum are the primary focus of BICY's invasive species programs.
